American Titles and Their Meanings

HC-Herding Instinct Certified=This is earned at a herding instinct test. No training necessary, but previous exposure to livestock is helpful.

CD-Companion dog=An obedience title earned with passing scores in the Novice Class at 3 AKC, CKC, or UKC obedience trials.


CDX-Companion Dog Excellent=An advanced obedience title involving jumping and retrieving earned with passing scores in the Open Class at 3 trials. Dog must first have a CD.

UD-Utility Dog=A more advanced obedience title involving scent discrimination and hand signals earned with 3 passing scores in the Utility Class at trials. Dog must first have a CDX,

UDX-Utility Dog Excellent=Earned with several passing scores in both Utility and Open Class on the same day.

OTCH-Obedience Trial Champion=The most difficult title, earned with many wins and placing in Open and Utility (Except Canadian UD is called an OTCH).

TD-tracking Dog=earned by passing an AKC or CKC tracking test where the dog must closely follow the scent of a stranger who walked at least 440 yards across a field. at least a half an hour ago, turning several cornors, and find the article left at the end.

TDX-Tracking Dog Excellent=earned by passing an advanced tracking test where the track is at least 3 hours old and over 800 yards long, over varied terrain with cross tracks, obstacles and 3 articles to find.

CGC-Canine Good Citizen=An informal test of beginning obedience and socialization.

TDI-Therapy Dogs International=similar to the CGC, dogs are certified by temperment test society test of tempement and socialization where his reaction to unusual sights, sounds, footing and people who are friendly, neutral or threatening is evaluated.

TC-Temperment Certified=Awarded by the German Shepherd Dog Club of America, Basically the same as the TT

BH-Begleithund(companion dog)=A german Test of training and temperment equivalent to a comination of a CD and TT. Awarded by a Schutzhund Club.

FH-Fartenhund(tracking Dog)=A german advanced tracking test similar to the TDX. Awarded by a Schutzhund Club.

ROM-Register of Merit=Awarded by the German Shepherd Dog Club of America for producing champion and pointed offspring.  In order for a sire to become eligible for the ROM designation, the following requirements must be met.
                                   
a) point total must be 100 points or more
                                    b) points must be earned by 10 or more progency
                                    c) 5 of the progency must achieve the AKC title of CH.


In order for a bitch to become eligible for the ROM designation, the following requirements must be met. a) point total must be 40 points or more
                                  
b)points must be earned by 4 or more progency
                                    c) 2 of these progency must achieve the AKC title of Ch


CH-champion=tTitle awarded in the confirmation ring at AKC licensed shows. A dog needs to gain 15 points in order to acheive this title, but he must have won 2 major shows worth 3-5 points apiece under 2 different judges, and his total 15 points should be made under 3 different judges.

OFA-Orthapedic Foundation of Animals=Certified free of hip dysplasia by 3 radiologists. OFA gives a grade of Excellent, Good, or Fair to all certified dogs.  Dogs must be at least 2 years old to be Certified. OFA H&E= when hips and elbows are both certified.

GV-Grand Victor (dog)=Awarded by the German Shepherd Dog Cub of America National Show.  Only given once a year.  Dog must of won best of breed or best of opposite to breed.

GVX-Grand Victrix (bitch)=must of won best of breed or best of opposite to breed.

Sel.-Select Champion=Awarded by the German Shepherd Dog Club of America National Show.  Special ranking for better than usual animals.
